Drawing and sizing
Card, banknote and coin sizes for wallet patterns
PatinaCAD has card, banknote and coin sizes for wallet patterns built in. Stamp a real bank card, a banknote in any of 16 currencies, a coin or a snap onto your drawing, and size the pocket round it before you cut any leather.
Size pockets against the real thing
A card slot a millimetre too tight won't take a card, and a cash pocket drawn for one currency may not fit another. A pocket sized for US dollars, which are 66 mm tall, is too short for a €50 note at 77 mm. Measuring every card and note in your drawer takes time.
PatinaCAD's template library holds the published sizes, drawn as outlines you can snap to. Stamp one where the pocket goes and draw round it.
What's in the library
| Folder | What's in it |
|---|---|
| Cards | Credit or debit card (ID-1, 85.6 × 53.98 mm, with 3.18 mm corners), ID card (ID-2, 105 × 74 mm), passport (ID-3, 125 × 88 mm), and US, European and Japanese business cards |
| Notes | Current banknotes in 16 currencies: US dollar, euro, UK pound, Swiss franc, Canadian dollar, Australian dollar, Japanese yen, Chinese yuan, South Korean won, Singapore dollar, Thai baht, Philippine peso, Indian rupee, Brazilian real, South African rand and Nigerian naira |
| Coins | Euro, US, UK, Indian and Japanese coins |
| Studs | Studs of 6, 8 and 10 mm, and snaps of 12.5 and 15 mm |
| Circles, Ovals, Squares | Basic shapes in common sizes |
Each template's name gives its size, for example €50 (140 × 77). Where every note of a currency is the same size, as with the US dollar, the Canadian dollar and the Philippine peso, there is one template for all of them.
Stamp a template
- Click the Template library button in the top bar.
- Open a folder, for example Starter ▸ Cards, and click a template.
- Its outline follows the cursor and snaps to your drawing. Click to place a copy, and keep clicking to place more.
- Press Esc when you're done.
Stamped templates are drawn in red, so they stand apart from your cut lines, and you can snap to their corners. The flip buttons at the top flip a template before you stamp it.
Build a pocket round a card
- Stamp a bank card where the slot goes.
- Draw the slot round it with the Rectangle tool, snapping to the card's corners, and add the room you like to leave.
- Select the card and tick Hide when printing, so it stays on screen as a reference and off the paper.
For slot depths, allowances and cash pocket sizes, read leather wallet dimensions for cards and cash.
Save your own templates
Your own snaps, buckles, zips and logos belong in the library too. Select the shapes, choose Shape ▸ Template object ▸ Register as library template, and give it a name. It goes into My templates, ready to stamp into any pattern.
To share your library, Export zip saves all of it as one file, and Import brings in template files or a zipped library from someone else. Imports go into their own Imported folder.
Mark along a line with a template
The Distance marking tool can stamp a template at even spacing along a line instead of drawing a tick. Use it for a row of studs along a strap. Press M, open the library and click the template. Set the spacing under Mark every, tick Continuous, then click the line where the row starts. Each copy turns to follow the line.
Tips
- The notes are the current series. Older notes still in use can be a different size, so measure the ones you carry.
- Stamped templates print unless you hide them. Tick Hide when printing on every size reference.
- Use a stamped card to check a pocket drawn from a traced pattern before you cut.
- A stud or snap template on the pattern shows where to punch, and it prints at true size with the rest of the printed pattern.
Good to know
- The library is kept in your browser on this computer. Export it as a zip to back it up or move it.
- Templates are left out of SVG and DXF exports unless you tick Include library templates, so a size reference doesn't get cut by mistake.
- Each template is one shape. To edit it, press F8 to break it into lines and curves.
- Templates are plain outlines at the published size, with no artwork.
